Female Sportscenter? Why Not?

by Chris Morris

December 9th, 2021

Time has come for a lot of things, frankly…like, ALOT of things…but a female-led Sportscenter?

We are LONG OVERDUE…

Here in Canada, our version of Sportscentre (with the ‘re’ at the end) has mostly NHL talk, in the winter NBA and in the summer MLB and also LOTS of NFL talk…not much room for anything else, male or female, so unless they expand the shows to two hours, there needs to be a separate show just for female sports, with female anchors and reporters.

But what would they talk about?

Well, LOTS of things!

Here are a list of topics to start with…

****obviously this is a static list, and by the time you read it, these will be old topics, but as of December 2021, these would be topics to start with…in other words, I probably won’t be adding to this list…just a starting point…

*The PHF (Premiere Hockey Federation; a female hockey league with teams in the US and Toronto)

They just re-branded from the NWHL - why?

Why that name?

After doing some research I would like to know more like who is this Dani Rylan Kearney person? Why did she have to step down as Commissioner? Who is the new Commissioner Tyler Tumminia?

The Boston Pride just signed an Olympian…is this as big a deal as I think it is?

The NWHL had a past that has been described as “shady” why is that?

They just doubled their salary cap and share profits with their players yet the players need 9-5 jobs?

What is the definition of a “professional” league?

Mikyla Grant-Mentis apparently is amazing, yet where does she stand compared to the PWHPA or Olympic players?

The Ice Garden does a great job covering the league with articles…wouldn’t it be great to have that information said out loud on a TV show?

Not to mention, this is an on going league so showing highlights from games could be shown…

*The PWHPA (The Professional Women’s Hockey Player’s Association)

Where most (if not all) of the All-Star Women’s Players are associated, not the PHF - why?

Although with the Olympians getting ready for the Olympics, the current tour, called the Dream Gap, still has teams playing each other…who are these players? They aren’t in the PHF or the Olympics…so are they still considered 2nd string? Or are they 3rd string?

Is this a legit idea that has legs, or will it run out of gas if an NHL-backed league doesn’t start in the next few years?

What is with the tension/borderline hatred between the PWHPA and the PHF/NWHL?

*Women’s Olympic Hockey teams

Best rivalry in hockey is Canada vs. USA, possibly in sports overall…why?

“Centralization” does this always happen or is this another word for “quarantine” due to COVID?

These players are being added to the NHL 22 EA Sports game…that’s super cool but did they get the PWHPA’s endorsement?

*WNBA

I just want to know more about this league…saw their 2020 documentary and became a fan instantly…

Another on going league so nightly highlights would be shown…

From what I’ve read online, their players are well paid, and a big bonus is that the players can play in other parts of the world in the off season, as opposed to the NWSL…

*NWSL

They just concluded their season, the losing team in the championship game then, the next day, fired their coach due to sexual misconduct…how long did they know about this? They couldn’t have fired him before playing for the championship?

As mentioned before, the WNBA players can make a ton of money playing in the WNBA but also playing elsewhere in the off season, but from what I have read, these players can’t do that and then also don’t make much money here either so that sucks…

I read online that the average salary for players is $22,000 a year…no way Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair are making that, right (nor should they)? Is there a salary cap?

They have a new expansion team backed by Hollywood stars and there is an expansion draft coming up…

How many great players play in the NWSL as opposed to overseas…leads to the next topic…

*Women’s National Soccer team (Canada)

This is specific to Canada, but a lot has been said recently about the need to start up a professional league in Canada, as most of the top players have to play overseas to make any money…this is getting a lot of traction here, with the WPSL declaring they want to include Canadian teams, but is that a good idea longterm?

What even is the WPSL?

Julia Grosso signs with Juventus in the UWCL…is this a big deal?

Apparently there is a group of former female soccer stars “looking into” the possibility of a Canadian professional league…who are they? Are they close?

*Women’s Tennis Association (WTA)

They recently came out and said they are boycotting China and wanting to “do the right thing”, risking losing a ton of money in the China market, while others like the NBA and the International Tennis Federation seem to “back down” to China…

Lots of highlights!

*Women’s stars dealing with online harassment /mental health issues

Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka and so many others have been outspoken about mental health and in some cases, have been met with support and other times, have come under fire…absolutely a topic to discuss!

NOT TO MENTION:

Women’s Golf LPGA

Women’s Olympic Sports in the Winter, later the Summer

Upcoming FIFA Soccer World Cup!

Lots of women’s soccer highlights from all over the world!

NCAA Women’s Hockey!

SO MANY TOPICS that aren’t discussed and so many amazing people to interview…

WHY HASN’T IT HAPPENED?

If not by ESPN or TSN in Canada, then by some other TV station…hopefully one day…but why wait?
